The Orphanage
Minimize
The first visit to the orphanage occurred in August of 2005. As we approached the gate of the orphanage, the lack of state funding was obvious. The unattractive building was surrounded by a few benches and a fence. There were no play structures, no landscaping, only cement and dirt.

On an impromtu tour of the orphanage, the assistant director took us around and showed us where the children lived. There were 2 large rooms, one for the boys and one for the girls where 12-15 children shared the same space.

The furniture in the bedrooms was outdated and the bedding old. There was one bathroom with old toilets and an area for washing.

There were no laundry facilities and consequently all children were in charge of washing their own clothes. We noticed two little girls around 4 or 5 years old and asked if they too must wash their clothes. The answer was an assured “yes” because there was no state money to purchase a washing machine. While it seemed like the children were provided with the bare necessities, the orphanage was far from a stimulating environment.

Since 2005 the director of the orphanage (Tatiana Alexandrovna Zhadan) has made remarkable changes by using a combination of state money and private donations. In 2006 a washing machine was purchased and installed at the orphanage and a brand new kitchen was built.

In 2007 we were pleasantly surprised by additional changes such as brand new orthopoedic mattresses for the kids, the art gallery, new paint and a newly added quarantine wing. What once looked like an unattractive facility has been transformed into a comfortable, cozy children's home. Having seen such significant changes in person we are delighted to provide continuous support under the leadership of this particular director.
